Need help understanding how puns click with readers

I’ve been trying to write some funny content and I’m curious about how puns click with readers. Sometimes I come up with a clever line, but I’m not sure if it lands or just confuses people. What makes a pun effective and how do you know it works in your writing?

Are there certain topics or wordplays that tend to perform better than others? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s used puns successfully in blogs, stories, or even social media.
